Most of us have encountered falls, poor posture, sports injuries, motor vehicle accidents, surgeries or other events that may have contributed to having pain and restrictions that limit our movements. Myo (muscle) fascia restrictions do not show up on any of our medical tests currently being utilized. Tests like x-rays, MRI's, CAT scans and blood work do not show myofascial restrictions. It is thought that many people suffering with pain and limited range of motion, may be having fascial problems and go undiagnosed. The myofascial principles of this holistic approach developed and refined by John F. Barnes PT, allows fascia to soften and rehydrate, letting your body begin to heal itself.
People often ask how is this form of myofascial release therapy different from other forms of therapy? The key difference is engaging fascia at the collagenous barrier without force; moderate sustained pressure for the release to occur naturally. Another integral part of this approach, is the myofascial self-treatment techniques that supports your progress between visits.
This MFR approach is most beneficial when done with a frequency of one to three times per week for several weeks. This allows the tissues to continue to release, the body to move back to proper alignment and the self-treating to be practiced and adjusted.
